The Celtic Period in Ireland began in the second half of the 1st millennium BC and the designs began as flowing naturalistic patterns then slowly transformed into the classic intertwined artwork of the later, early medieval period. The spiritual aspect of Celtic Art is most clearly evident in the religious artwork of the Christian era but had a sacred and mysterious significance from the very earliest if times.
